Custom JavaScript and Dynamics 365 functionality add a New Year’s boost to Azure AD B2C

Direct Dynamics integration, secure base script and more come to Microsoft’s leading customer authentication platform.

While most of the working world may have been taking it easy in the run up to Christmas, the Microsoft B2C team certainly weren’t winding down.

At an exclusive Azure Active Directory B2C product group catch-up in Redmond, Washington, Microsoft announced two new features that will surely have a big impact on the market: JavaScript customisation going into ‘public preview’ for B2C integrations, and B2C becoming the default authentication mechanism for another Microsoft product – Dynamics 365 portal.

 

JavaScript customisation

This new release is the final piece in the puzzle in terms of integrating your web application fully with Azure AD B2C. In the integration process, you can modify every pixel on the authentication pages by creating an HTML source based on Microsoft’s easy-to-use template along with CSS and images.

So far, it’s been difficult to get any more dynamic than that say, for example, if we wanted to modify drop-down boxes based on previously input values etc. JavaScript can provide this extra power.

The problem up until now has been that if you supply JavaScript to the authentication pages, this could clash with B2C’s ‘base’ JavaScript. This could cause the page to break unexpectedly if the base JavaScript changes.

With this release, Microsoft have introduced ‘page contracts’, which will allow you to specify which version of the base JavaScript to use. Thus, effectively locking the base script against further updates until you’re ready to test and update your own pages again.

This will be a very welcome change for B2C customers!

 

Dynamics 365 integration

Dynamics 365 is Microsoft’s flagship CRM product, competing with the likes of Salesforce, and providing flexible customisation options on top of heavyweight CRM functionality. The user portal is a standard front end for customers to login and connect with your organisation by submitting support tickets or initiating other types of interactions.

Historically, the user portal has supported various types of authentication, including ‘external authentication’ using modern protocols such as OAuth. But now, direct integration with B2C is officially supported – and not just that – it’s also recommended as the default option.

This change will no doubt lead to more integrators taking an interest in B2C and will, of course, mean that many more customers will start to use B2C for their front-end customer authentication experiences.

Although a relatively small change at Microsoft’s end, this will certainly have a significant impact on the market and is a huge indication of Microsoft’s confidence in the product.

These latest additions serve to enhance Microsoft B2C which, with its comprehensive feature set, standards-based design, and scalable, robust architecture, now comes across as a confident, tier-1 player in the B2C authentication market.
