OCG employees raise over £3,000 for two South Wales charities

Gemma Clegg

It was a beautiful day in South Wales. The sun was shining, and there was hardly a cloud in the sky.

Ten intrepid Oxford Computer Group UK (our name prior to rebranding as ThirdSpace in October 2018) employees set off on a fifteen-mile trek, accompanied by “Fraser Bear”, the mascot of one of OCG’s chosen charities, Believe.

The trek would take in two of South Wales’ highest peaks, Blorenge and Sugar Loaf, challenging the fitness and determination of the team.

They spent weeks in intense training in preparation for the walk. Some tested themselves on local, smaller peaks, and Account Manager Robin even took on a half marathon!

Our thoughts on the challenge

PMO Lead Nick Blake blended in very well, with his shades making him look like a seasoned mountain walker.

MD Neil Coughlan thought the weather was awesome, but was well prepared with a hat and coat for every occasion, just in case.

PM Sam Mitten disappeared up to his neck in a bog, was attacked by ants at lunch and chased by a flock of rams.

Service Desk Manager Alex Coombs doesn’t like sheep. She was also chased by a flock of rams.

Senior Consultant Jamie Vaughan was our master navigator, with built in power pack!

Service Desk Analyst Emma-Lee Norman looked after Fraser Bear throughout the trek, and was instrumental in drumming up support and sponsorship.

Account Manager Josh Smith is very accident prone. He almost fell down Peak 1, and also sat on a stinging nettle.

Account Manager Jonathan Scott attempted to adopt a farm Beagle puppy and put it in his backpack.

Support Analyst Gwyn Jenkins was often mistaken for Mountain Rescue… by his own teammate, Josh.

Account Manager Robin Tyerman is a machine, who was way ahead of the group on Peak 2.

Turning Silver into Gold

The team took on the Silver level of The South Wales Three Peaks Trial challenge in Abergavenny, and they conquered!

Sore legs all round on Sunday (… and Monday, and Tuesday) but it was worth it. Both Believe and Hafal, the team’s chosen charities, received over £1200 each in sponsorship money, which will go towards supporting Believe in their quest to raise awareness of organ donation, and for Hafal in their work supporting those affected by mental illness in Wales.

On the same day, Caroline Williams took on her own challenge to raise money for Believe. She decided to do a “Standard Duathlon”, which involves a 6-mile run, followed by a 25-mile cycle, and finishing with another 3-mile run. As someone who couldn’t run for more than a minute just 6 months ago, this was a mammoth task, which was completed in just under 4 gruelling hours. A further £600 was raised for the charity, to take the total raised on the day to £3,000.
