Approaching the end of your studies and wondering what comes next? Find out if a consultancy career at ThirdSpace could be what you’re looking for…
ThirdSpace always has one eye on the future. Whether that’s the technology itself or the people developing and deploying it, we’re keen to invest in both.
To that end, we have close contact with universities and recruitment agencies to help talented students take their first steps into the wider world of identity and security.
One such student is Andrew Bennett, who began as a student placement but is now a fully-fledged ThirdSpacer.
We sat down with Andrew to find out how he found the journey and why he decided to come back for more.
Sure, no problem. My name is Andrew and I started working at ThirdSpace in June 2017. I studied Computer Sciences with Artificial Intelligence at York University and graduated in summer 2019.
I started as a placement student taking on a Junior Analyst Programmer role in the Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) team. That was a really great experience – I had a lot of exposure to the different services ThirdSpace offers.
After a few months, I moved onto the Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS) team as a Junior Consultant. I was then offered a full-time role as a Consultant once I had finished my studies – I couldn’t wait to get started!
I think I was one of the first students on this scheme and it worked well for me.
Like I said, originally, I was placed in the CIAM team as programming was my main skill from university. As well as exercising my coding skills, I met lots of colleagues and customers, and got to grips with the business’s core service lines.
During the ThirdSpace Summit event in October 2018, I learnt a lot more about what the other teams had to offer… That led to me joining Mat Richards and the security consultants and architects in the EMS team.
My responsibilities within this team were as a developer for the Current State Assessment (CSA) project. I worked with internal tools to manage customer needs. I also contributed towards the service offering, local AD assessments, and developed scripts.
In my spare time, I assisted consultants and learnt a lot from them. ThirdSpace has some of the most talented people in the industry who are always willing to share their knowledge.
When I returned as a graduate Consultant, I managed the life-cycle of projects in EMS. This included more work on developing the CSA offering and gradually taking on more complex tasks.
As I was still learning, I helped the senior members of the team to free up their time, whilst picking up new skills. There’s always plenty of administration and documentation around solutions, so that requires some focus time.
“ThirdSpace has some of the most talented people in the industry who are always willing to share their knowledge.”
I also worked on modifications for the user experience and technical developments. I have learnt everything I know around Microsoft through the ThirdSpace consultants and architects – they seem to know everything!
Thanks to their influence I continue to grow within ThirdSpace and gradually take on more responsibilities.
I am looking forward to engaging with more customers, take ownership of solutions, and enjoy the benefits of being a full-time ThirdSpacer.
Okay, let’s take a Friday. In the morning, the EMS team has a weekly meeting discussing how each of our projects is going, if we are facing any problems, and how we can help each other with solutions.
We are all remote, so usually, this is virtual, but every so often we get together in person.
The rest of the day is focused on delivery work. I tend to focus on customer work first. Then, late afternoon, I look at internal tools, documentation, and any administrative tasks that need to be completed.
I haven’t had much exposure to other companies, but I do speak with other students and look at what other businesses do. I have been so impressed with ThirdSpace and am always keen to promote the business.
The impression I get is that ThirdSpace is a lot more personal – it’s like a big family. Everyone is friendly and knowledgeable. The teams and people are great – they are very talented and always willing to take the time to speak with you.
The social side is amazing and includes the All Hands, Christmas party and celebrating successes (to name a few).
I would say make the most of every experience and what the company has to offer.
There is always so much going on with socials, charity work and events. It is such a friendly place with wonderful people.
If you are a student, get in touch. You just need to be willing to jump in and get involved. It’s a fast-paced environment, but you will be supported all the way. You won’t regret it!
